When you’re painting a landscape, it’s all about learning to really see—training your eye to notice what matters, and making choices about what to include and what to leave out. It’s also about trusting your artistic instincts to build a composition that feels right and draws the viewer in. This workshop is designed to give you a clear process to help you do exactly that.
We’ll be rolling up our sleeves and getting straight into the painting.
We’ll begin by getting comfortable with the paints and brushes, experimenting with application techniques. You’ll create colour swatches and explore different mark-making styles to get into the creative flow.
Next, we’ll plan the composition of the artwork — considering focal points, how the viewer’s eye moves through the piece, and the overall balance.
Landscape #1: You’ll paint a single tree within a landscape, using it as the focal point while exploring how light and shadow define form.
Landscape #2: You’ll apply the complete process to a landscape painting of your choice, either from an image you bring along, from one of mine or one of my paintings - the choice is yours.. Starting with basic shapes and values, you’ll gradually build layers to develop structure, light, and texture. The aim is to work through the method clearly, letting your personal style emerge while creating a well-balanced composition.
The plan is, by the end of the workshop, for you to have created two landscapes - the 'Portrait of a Tree' and another of your choice both on canvases.
