Description

Watercolour Florals – A Gentle Introduction to Painting with Watercolour

Watercolour is known for its luminous transparency and spontaneous beauty. While it can be unpredictable, learning how it works opens up a world of expressive possibilities. Watercolours are both relaxing and addictive to use - they are rewarding and easily accessible medium to explore.

In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, you'll learn the essentials of watercolour while painting floral forms. We'll explore colour mixing, brush control, layering, how to break down the flower/still life into shapes, and expressive mark-making, using the natural elegance of both fresh flowers and printed images as our inspiration.

You’ll be guided through key watercolour techniques including:

  1. Understanding watercolour’s nature – exploring transparency, flow, timing, and the medium’s permanent qualities.

  2. Water-to-pigment ratios – how dilution affects texture, blooming/cauliflowers, and absorbency.

  3. Layering – building transparent layers to create depth and light.

  4. Wet-on-wet – using damp paper to create soft blends and natural effects.

  5. Dry-on-wet – learning how to form soft transitions and more defined edges.

We’ll begin with simple, structured exercises before applying these skills to create a variety of artworks - some ready to gift or frame, others to continue developing or keep as references for future work.

Arches 300g watercolour paper, paints, brushes and fresh flowers for reference—are provided, but if you have your own brushes and watercolours please bring these along.

*Please note: this is not a Paint and Sip style workshop; it is a focused, skill-based session designed to develop your watercolour skills and techniques.

I will encourage you to embrace the challenge of pushing your boundaries, to let go of expectations, to be open to learn from your mistakes, but most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process! After all, art making is just practice.

NOTES:
  1. Tea, coffee biscuits supplied but BYO lunch.

  2. The Studio is ABOVE the Golf Club building at Quamby Estate.

  3. Park your car in the car park on the left as you drive in.

  4. There are 17 stairs to the studio.

  5. The bathroom is downstairs.
